Welsh transport minister Ken Skates has published before-and-after pictures of a roadside on the devolved administration's strategic network to illustrate the success of its biodiversity plan.
The Welsh Government said that work is underway on hundreds of roadsides across the country’s strategic road network, to better manage and increase the biodiversity of grass verges as part of its Llwybr Newydd i Natur – the Nature Recovery Action Plan.
Before the Nature Recovery Action Plan
It highlighted the A483 at Plasnewydd near Ammanford in Carmarthenshire as one of many areas with an assortment of native wildflower plants specifically chosen to enhance the botanical interest of the verge and provide nectar resources for pollinators, such as butterflies.
It added that the colourful grass verges also offer a specular talking point for passing road users and provide support to local businesses by sourcing the plug plants from local suppliers.
After the Nature Recovery Action Plan
Officials said that in just under a year the project at Plasnewydd has seen ‘fabulous growth’ and is already playing its part in supporting nature.
