Wokingham Borough Council has awarded a maintenance and construction contract to VolkerHighways worth £68m for the first seven years.
The contract will begin 1 April 2019 and run for seven years, with a possible extension to 10.
The business will undertake construction services and both routine and reactive highways maintenance, including street lighting, structures, bridges, drainage and winter maintenance; as well as safety inspections, the delivery of major infrastructure projects and emergency response cover.
In addition, the team will work in partnership with Wokingham Borough Council on their ‘21st Century programme’, using technology to keep residents fully informed about works being carried out throughout the borough.
This includes the council’s ‘Report It’ system, which aims to give residents the opportunity to report highways issues directly to the VolkerHighways team and receive updates as they are resolved.
The council has also awarded a separate professional services and consultancy contract to WSP and together, the three organisations will form the ‘Wokingham Highways Alliance’.
Cllr Anthony Pollock, executive member for Highways and Transport said: 'We are very pleased to be working in partnership with WSP and VolkerHighways to deliver a more agile, efficient and informative service.'
