TfL upgrades incident management system to give 'single, unified view'

01/08/2023 | DOMINIC BROWNE

London's new incident management system provides 'a single, unified view' of the capital's roads for the first time, Transport for London (TfL) has said.

The software is the product of a partnership between TfL and digital services provider, Sopra Steria.

Covering TfL's network of 580km of roads, including all of the capital’s 6,400 traffic signal junctions, the system generates rapid alerts for TfL by analysing large volumes of data on factors like road accidents, traffic congestion and roadworks.

The information on incidents is quickly delivered to local authorities and emergency services and as a result, helps authorities respond to incidents efficiently to improve road safety and minimise pollution and congestion across the city.

Since its launch, the software has been deployed for the London Marathon and the King’s Coronation.

Irfan Shaffi, operational control manager at TfL, said: 'The transformative system produced from our work with Sopra Steria will enable TfL to manage our surface transport network much more effectively, and gives us a vital tool to keep London moving.

'This project within TfL’s wider Surface Intelligent Transport Systems (SITS) programme, in combination with the other technology tools in development, gives us excellent situational awareness and facilitates the strong green heartbeat needed to deliver upon the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.'

Adrian Fieldhouse, managing director, government and transport at Sopra Steria, said: 'From the outset we worked together as one team with the shared goal of improving the lives of Londoners – a truly collaborative approach that has led to a system that will improve the lives of millions of road users in the capital.

'The development of a highly scalable and flexible transport solution will also prove invaluable as new technologies continue to emerge – future-proofing London’s traffic system for years to come.'

As part of a four-year programme, Sopra Steria and TfL have worked together closely – adopting an agile approach to software development and project management – to design the new system.
