Staffordshire road improvements could help economy

20/02/2014 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

Improvements to major trunk roads will help drive economic growth in Staffordshire.

According to the county council, the improvements to the A50 Growth Corridor promise to enhance a crucial transport link between the East and West Midlands – and help to bring up to 8,000 new jobs to the area.

The government investment will see the major trunk road improved in two separate projects around Uttoxeter, with project A creating a new junction to the west to support housing and a new business park and project B focusing on improved safety and reduction of traffic delays by the removal of two roundabouts and the creation of a new junction to the east.

Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for economy and infrastructure, said: “These two projects will support businesses and communities right along the A50 delivering growth, jobs and investment along the corridor linking the East and West Midlands.

“Improving roads and other infrastructure to keep goods and people on the move is vital as we strive to improve Staffordshire’s economy, creating a connected county where businesses are attracted to invest and grow. Ultimately leading to more jobs and prosperity for Staffordshire people.

“Securing this government funding for these projects is excellent news for communities and businesses alike and will also cut congestion, reduce journey times and help improve safety on this busy trunk road too.

“The improvements of the A50 Growth Corridor play an integral and vital role in supporting business, creating jobs and boosting tourism and I hope as many people as possible take the time to have their say on these exciting proposals.”

Residents and businesses can find out more about the two projects at public drop in sessions taking place at Uttoxeter Racecourse on 25 February and 3 March.

Details of the funding for the projects for the trunk road, which is managed by the Highways Agency, was announced by the Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander in December 2013 as part of the national infrastructure plan.

Andrew Butterfield, asset development team leader at the Highways Agency, said: “We want our roads to support economic growth and these major road improvements developed by Staffordshire County Council, will do just that on the A50 near Uttoxeter.

"Good roads are vital for economic prosperity and the Highways Agency is working closely with Staffordshire County Council to develop and deliver this exciting project.”

In other news, the county council’s cabinet has approved Amey as its preferred delivery partner for the next 10 years – with the option to extend for a further 10 years. Amey has pledged to deliver £21.5 million cost benefits over the next five years.
