An £800,000 Highways Agency project to improve safety along the M602 into Manchester and Salford will get underway next month.
Area 10 contractor Balfour Beatty/Mott MacDonald will oversee work to install an extra lane on the eastbound carriageway near the end of the motorway on its approaches to Regent Road roundabout at junction 3.
About 400 yards of the motorway between Hodge Lane footbridge and its approaches to the roundabout will also be widened from two to three lanes.
Preparatory work is due to start on Monday 18 February with the first traffic management being set out on Monday 4 March. The scheme is due to be completed by Sunday 21 April.
Around 32,000 vehicles use the eastbound M602 every day and the improvement project will add extra capacity on the approach to Regent Road roundabout to reduce queuing and associated ‘shunt’ style accidents.
Highways Agency project sponsor Mark Mosley said: “Adding extra capacity into the roundabout approaches will reduce congestion, especially at peak times in the morning and evening, and help to reduce associated accidents - complementing the automatic warning system we have installed along other sections of the M602 in recent years.”
