A newly proposed British Standard for recycling road surfacing materials using bituminous emulsion or foamed bitumen is out to consultation.
BS 9228 – Recycling of roads and other paved areas using bitumen emulsion or foamed bitumen – Materials, production, installation and product type testing – Specification, is out to consultation by the BSI until 3 February 2021.
It covers design and composition, production, installation and performance testing and also includes mixtures prepared using bituminous binders that may contain hydraulic material.
The Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA) highlighted that BS 9228 describes 'a number of methods by which existing material in the road or other paved areas is either processed in-situ or uses recycled material processed ex-situ'.
Paul Boss, chief executive of the RSTA, said: 'Industry experts from member companies and other stakeholders were involved in the development and drafting of BS 9228 for bitumen emulsion and foamed bitumen. Both offer cost effective and material efficient road surface treatment and the availability of this standard will help to forward their use.'
