Poole £15m works enhance sustainable travel

Milestone Infrastructure has begun work on a package of bus, walking, cycling and road improvements in Poole worth £15m.

The firm said it will use its expertise to deliver improvements to enhance transportation options, promote sustainable travel and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

The work includes two new bus lanes, junction improvements, landscaping, tree planting and supporting local biodiversity.

In addition, 4.5km of road will be resurfaced, 1.8km of footways will be improved and a new 2.7km two-way cycle track will also be installed.

The contract is valued at £14,743,569.80 and was awarded through the Hampshire Gen 4 Framework, with the project funded by a £17.5m grant from the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund.

Sean Murphy, regional director at Milestone, said the firm’s successful completion of Stage 1 Early Contractor Involvement ‘demonstrates our commitment to excellence in collaboration’.

He added: ‘We look forward to delivering transformative infrastructure that will benefit the local community and enhance sustainable travel options.’

Andy Hadley, portfolio holder for climate response, environment and energy at BCP Council, said: ‘Milestone Infrastructure is an extremely experienced highway maintenance provider with a strategic focus on safer, greener highways; I am delighted they are delivering this significant project.

‘Ringwood Road in Poole is one of our region’s busiest roads, with traffic volumes at saturation point, and a worn-out surface. With major resurfacing taking place alongside a range of other enhancements, these ambitious improvements will transform travel options and improve journeys for everyone.’

The highway authority said the project will support its commitment to decarbonise its transport network by providing facilities to help meet its target of 50% of local journeys being made by walking, cycling or public transport by 2030.

Mr Hadley added: ‘Collectively these measures aim to encourage more people to walk, wheel or use public transport, freeing up the roads for those that really need to use them.’

Milestone said that in line with its commitment to provide social value in the communities in which it works, it will provide local employment opportunities, promote active travel and find opportunities to educate schools in the area about wellbeing, exercise and cycle safety.
