HE awards new-style contract worth over £300m to Amey

21/03/2016 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

Amey has been awarded a £300 million contract to carry out highway maintenance services and repairs in Area 7 on the Highways England network.

The maintenance and response contract could run for up to 15 years and is part of Highways England’s new delivery arrangements in the East Midlands.

The contract, which will run from 1 July 2016, will see Amey delivering routine highway maintenance services, repairs to defects, emergency incident response and severe weather services on the East Midlands network.

It is the second contract to be awarded under the set of new arrangements in the East Midlands, which sees Highways England making a change from its previous way of working, bringing key functions in-house to take direct control of its road network.

A new five-year design services contract, with an expected value of over £25m, was awarded to Kier Highways earlier this month.

Kier’s duties will include preparing technical designs and undertaking supporting work for capital projects from an initial scheme feasibility phase through to the as-built phase, and will run from 1 July 2016

David Poole, director for commercial and procurement at Highways England, said: “We are delighted to welcome Amey and Kier Highways to our East Midlands supply chain community. The awarding of these two new contracts represents a significant milestone for Highways England, marking a real change in the way we have previously managed contracts.

“Collaboration with our supply chain is key to our new way of working in the East Midlands and we are looking forward to establishing a successful, long-term relationship with the appointed contractors.”

Andy Milner, newly appointed chief executive Officer of Amey, added: “We are extremely proud of our reputation for delivering high quality services for Highways England, helping to improve millions of journeys every year. I am therefore pleased we have the opportunity to continue this work in another key part of Highways England's road network, putting safety and the experience of road users at the heart of what we do.”

Haydn Mursell, Kier chief executive, said: “This design services award demonstrates our flexibility and adaptability to the client’s evolving delivery model whilst enabling the Group to showcase the breadth of its capability. We are pleased to be able to benefit from Highway England’s new asset led delivery model which allows us to participate in further contract awards beyond the four Areas that we currently operate.”

Further contracts will be awarded for specialist goods and services in the coming months and suppliers will be appointed to the new framework for delivering construction works in late April. All contracts will begin on 1 July 2016, once the current Managing Agent Contract with Aone+ has expired.

Highways England will be working with the successful contractors to ensure that they are mobilised and ready to begin delivering key services from 1 July 2016.
