East Kent motorists set to benefit from road improvements

04/06/2013 | HIGHWAYS REPORTERS

Highway improvements worth £2.3 million will be implemented in East Kent after the county council received local pinch point funding.

Part of the money will be spent tackling severe congestion on the Westwood roundabout.

The Department for Transport has announced that it will fund more than £1.5million of the £2.3million project to relieve a severe bottleneck that is affecting existing drivers and passengers of local bus services, and help boost further business and employment in Westwood and Thanet.

The Westwood relief improvements will be the second successful Kent County Council scheme this year to benefit from the funding – the first being the congested North Farm industrial estate in Tunbridge Wells.

David Brazier, Kent County Council cabinet member for transport and environment, said: "We are extremely pleased that the Department for Transport will be supporting both our Westwood and North Farm schemes. Both are absolutely essential schemes for the county, not only in bringing relief to many drivers, but also making sure that potential growth in the area isn't stunted.

"In these times of budget cuts and tight purse strings, it is refreshing to share such good news and add to the whole portfolio of work already underway to help regenerate and grow East Kent."

Thanet District Council fully support the scheme that is due to be completed by December 2014.

Cllr David Green, cabinet member for housing and planning services at Thanet District Council, added: "The proposed highway improvements at Westwood will help to significantly improve the flow of traffic through the district.

"Securing this funding is a key part of the overall strategy for improving the traffic flow which will support and enable future growth and we hope will provide a benefit to residents and businesses right across Thanet."

The proposed package of improvements aims to improve the existing highway capacity at the congested Westwood roundabout by:

  • Widening Poorhole Lane to provide a link road between the A256 and A254

  • Building new roundabouts at either end of the widened Poorhole Lane to offer an alternative route for existing and future through traffic movements.
