Engineering, environment and design consultancy Sweco UK has appointed former WSP boss Stephen Russell as its new director of transportation.
Mr Russell (pictured below right, with MD Max Joy) led WSP's UK highways business and is a chartered engineer with over 30 years’ experience in transport infrastructure, He has experience working with Highways England and Network Rail as well as previously holding roles at Mouchel and Atkins.
Comeback kid
Mr Russell will be on familiar territory as he was formerly operations director at Grontmij, prior to its acquisition by Sweco.
He will now be based in the business’ UK headquarters in Leeds, overseeing transport teams in 14 offices across the UK and Ireland. He also joins the Sweco UK leadership team.

He will help us to broaden our offering, bringing much experience from the wider industry, which will be extremely beneficial to our clients.'
Recent success for Sweco UK’s transport business includes playing a major role in the new Queensferry Crossing across the Firth of Forth and being awarded the M6 J10 improvement scheme and Package 4 of the Smart Motorways Programme for the M27 and M3 through Highways England.
Sweco UK currently employs approximately 850 people and consults on projects across the UK and Ireland via its network of 14 regional offices.
