Any old asphalt? IAT launches competition to find oldest in-use surface

The Institute of Asphalt Technology (IAT) has launched a competition to find the oldest in-use asphalt surface in the British Isles.

Durability is one of the most important and sought after properties of asphalt materials. How better to identify such durability than to find the location of the oldest “in service” asphalt surface in the UK or Ireland?

If you know of an old asphalt surface near your home or local area -perhaps you were even involved in laying it - let the IAT know where it is and when it was laid and take a photo of it.

The winning contributor will win an online shopping voucher, sponsored by IAT.

Entries must be sent to info@instituteofasphalt.org on or before 31 October 2024

All submissions should meet the following criteria:

• The surface must be asphalt as defined in EN13108 (or originally produced to BS594 or BS4987)
• The surface must be on a public highway, used by vehicular traffic.
• The surface should be at least 50 metres long and at least 3.0 metres wide.
• The surface should be untreated (not surface dressed or high friction surfaced)
• The surface should not be potholed or extensively patched
• Photographs and location details must be submitted
• The location should be referenced using the What3Words App or OS Grid Reference.
• Verification of the date laid should also be provided.
